    The Discipline of Delay

No one I know likes to wait. We live in an "instant society" which makes all of us more antsy than we used to be. Yet, we spend a lot of time waiting in traffic, in the grocery store and on each other.

Some of our waiting is intentional when we delay a purchase or activity. We simply discipline ourselves to save enough money so we can pay cash or delay our vacation until the off season rates begin. The benefits of this kind of delay more than outweigh the discomfort of waiting.

Much of the delay we encounter, though, is out of our hands. We wait on answers from prospective employers or the results from lab work. We wait on God to show us what to do or where to go. The longer we wait the greater the discipline that's imposed upon us. We wish we could speed things up, get a definite answer and move on with our lives. Most often we must simply press on believing God has reasons for postponing closure. We will understand it later in this life or the next.

So, as one who is quite familiar with waiting on God, l encourage you to keep on trusting and believing that He will see you through--we are being shaped into His likeness.

As a great friend of mine says, "better days ahead."

Jeremiah 29: 11 (New Living Translation) For I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
